Atmospheric, synth heavy black metal stuff is a formula often prone to failure.
Typically the synths are way too loud and poorly programmed, the guitars often
somewhat ineffectual, and the whole thing turns into a pleasant but boring type
of music that brings to mind new age music with some tremelo-d guitars somewhere
in the mix.
Fortunately, Rigid Horns manage to transcend the usual problems that befall
bands of this genre. I hear that both of the dudes in this band have some sort
of
background in computer based music (N and his infamous Atavix project, for one),
and it certainly shows- the drums are programmed terrifically, and whereas
most keyboard playing in this genre consists of 'play a chord every bar',
there's plenty of different rythyms and melody lines to keep you interested.
It helps that the songwriting's good. Get the fight scene music from some old
Japanese RPG and combine it with Summoning, and you're pretty much there.
Overall it's a lush, very soothing sound, perhaps a bit too keyboard heavy, but
quite pretty nonetheless. Lycanthropian MindFlight is a sweet song name, and
overall
it's probably the best here- the middle section in particular is quite
excellent, and overall it's tremelo, keyboard-y goodness is quite hard to
resist. Bleak Shades..
has a fantastic intro, but probably doesn't really deliver on the promise of
it's first few minutes or so.
Still, overall I really liked these songs, and upon each new listen I'm
definitely enjoying them more. Admittedly the songs conjure up boss battles,
energy balls and
rare attack +120 swords more so then forests and what not- and while I certainly
don't think that intended it's still a rather excellent byproduct of this band.
A slightly longer release would've been nice, but considering I got this for
free I can't complain. Highly recommended (their first demo is also quite good),
and
certainly a band with a bright future ahead of it.

To fully understand the review, I invite you to listen to Rigid Horns while
reading it.
The second demo of Rigid Horns is an offering of majestic music, an hymn to
nature and what it represents. The Triumph of Pan over the enemies of nature is
materialised in
two lenghty instrumental songs of black metal inspiration, with very strong folk
influences and epic moments.
Just picture the horned satyr roaming in the woods with a malicious smile,
playing his flute to the night...
Keyboards are omnipresent, as they are the analogy for the absent vocals, and
thus making this demo a piece of excellent atmospheric music. The guitars and
bass have this
particular metallic sound, sounding slightly awkward next to the soft keys. The
riffs are pretty good, mostly rythmic, the leads are played by the synth. The
bass is not as present
as in the first demo, yet it is here and it's easily heard. The programmed drums
are excellent, nearly alive, not artificial sounding, with very simple fills,
double bass, and epicness.
As one noticed, there is not a single ride cymbal in the whole demo.
The production is top notch, crystal clear, well balanced, the drum machine's
volume is maybe a bit low in the mix, as in respect to lo-fi black metal, but it
is absolutely no flaw.
No, onto the instrumental aspect: the fact that there are no vocals may be a way
of not showing the human presence, as to keep this a silent nature hymn, an opus
nocturne... As said before,
the 'vocal' themes are more or less replaced by the keyboards, through excellent
leads, at times epic, at times folky, and also melancholic. In
"Lycanthropian...", there is a layering of piano
(inspired by Stormblast best moments) which expresses an utter and peaceful
solitude. And on the other side of the spectrum, while listening to some
passages in "Bleak..." you will feel
exhilarated, and will chant "hoi!" along with the viking themes.
Standing on the nightside of a mountain, eyes lost in moonlit valleys, this mere
demo inhibitates what is best in man, in flows of majesty-filled harmonies. The
relative lenghts of the songs
allow the demo to be fully appreciated. Some repetitiveness-loving bastard like
me would say "'could have made half an hour out of this!", but hey, don't pay
attention me. That said,
not much is left to describe, you must make your mind for yourself and it's easy
to do so. Instrumental Night Metal isn't such a stupid tag, after all.

Rigid Hornsin demoa kuunnellessa sain todellisen ahaa-elämyksen. Luulin
löytäneeni vihdoinkin bändin, jonka solistista ei jäänyt mitään mieleen.
Tarkemman tutkimuksen jälkeen tajusin, levyn kakkoskappaleen alkaessa, että
eihän tässä niitä pidäkään olla. Nightrhymes on nimittäin kolmen
biisin mittainen demo instrumentaalista black metallia ja solistista ei ole koko
levyllä tietoakaan. Kaikesta huolimatta kuitenkin, levyn sisältö jaksaa
kiinnostaa sen verran että bändistä ja heidän musiikistaan jää kyllä
positiivinen mielikuva.
Kyseinen demo on siis Rigid Hornsin esikoislevy ja on myönnettävä, että bändin
jäsenet ovat lähteneet aika uskaliaaseen suuntaan. Kaupallista potentiaalia
tälle ei uskalla povata, mutta musikaalisesti ajatellen kokonaisuus on varsin
näppärä tuotos. Musikaalisesti ajatellen mennään siellä tummemmissa sfääreissä,
kaikista geneerisintä black metallia tämä ei ole mutta synkemmissä ympyröissä
kuitenkin liikutaan. Tuotanto on sopivalla tavalla tunkkainen ja vaikkei
musiikki
hirveän hyvin jääkään mieleen, se kuitenkin miellyttää sillä hetkellä kun sitä
kuuntelee. Mitään erityistä vikaa biiseistä on hyvin vaikea löytää ja tuotos on
monellakin tavalla positiivinen.
On vain iso kysymysmerkki että pitäisikö tässä bändissä olla sittenkin solisti.
Tällä hetkellä varsin ammattitaitoisesti tehdyt biisit jäävät kuitenkin
eräänlaiseksi
taustameteliksi ja kappaleilla ei ole sillä tavalla sanottavaa että Rigid
Hornsin tuotteelle pystyisi povaamaan kovinkaan erityistä tai suurta
tunnettavuutta.
Kaikki ainekset on kasassa että yhtyeen musiikki voisi olla mieleenpainuvaa ja
levytettävääkin, mutta jos itse olisin levymoguli en tähän rahojani laittaisi.
Instrumentaalinen black metal on vain niin marginaalimusiikkia, että on hieman
sääli että mahdolliset lahjat menee hukkaan tämän kaltaisessa tilanteessa.

A bit repetitive, but overly enjoyable.
In all honesty, instrumental albums, no matter what genre, are always something
I enjoy. Rigid Horns “Nightrhymes” is a perfect example. Why? Well because
I am admittedly not a huge fan of black metal, but “Nightrhymes” is already
easily one of my favorite pieces of work, particularly instrumental, that I
have.
“Nightrhymes” consists of three songs “Honour Never Dies”, “Promethean Blood”
and “Sudden Tie”. Each song has the same basic elements: symphonic styled
keyboards,
simple but excellent drums, and a driving guitar and bass duo. The keyboards are
often a driving factor and sometimes sound like a choir or an organ,
and even a
flute at one point.
Also, the drums are quite good on this album, at times they are the driving
force, while at others they are merely a piece of the puzzle.
As for the guitars
and bass, they are there,
but in a majority of the songs, they seem to have taken a supporting role,
albeit an important one.
As for the three songs, they get a bit repetitive, but if you take them in as
three parts of the same story (whether the band was going for that or not) it
makes
much more sense,
and more easily explains the similarities. So this really has no “recommended”
songs on it, as the whole this should be listened to.
Overall, Rigid Horns “Nightrhymes” was an enjoyable, but more importantly good,
sample of good instrumental music and would be appreciated by both fans of
black
metal and anyone who just likes instrumental works.

Vokalistivapaan vantaalaisen metallikaksikon ensimmäinen demo. Kieltämättä
vähempikin pystyy jo nostattamaan kaikenlaisia epäilyksiä arvostelijaparan
mieleen: täysin
instrumentaalinen metalli kun oikeastaan herättää mielikuvia ainoastaan
loputtomia sooloja vetävistä köyhän miehen yngwiemalmsteeneista. Rigid Horns ei
yhtyeenä kuitenkaan
ole onneksi mitään sen suuntaistakaan, vaan enimmäkseen Nightrhymesin materiaali
koostuu melodisesta, black metalin sukuisesta musiikista, joka ajoittain on aika
kosketinvoittoista.
Ensimmäisen demon sudenkuopatkin onnistutaan välttämään.
Sävellysten tunnelma on pääasiassa surumielinen, ehkä jopa haikea. Ajoittain on
vaikea välttää mielleyhtymiä vaikkapa Minas Morgulin aikaiseen Summoningiin ja
varsinkin demon
päättävä Suden tie on tremolokitaroineen kaikkineen suunnilleen samoista
elementeistä veistetty kuin Itävallan kaksikon materiaali. Tunnelma on toki
erilainen ja muutenkin Rigid Horns
on selvästi ihan oma persoonansa eikä mikään kakkosluokan hiilipaperikopio,
vaikka omalta osaltaan myös ohjelmoidut rumpuvyörytykset muistuttavat
Summoningista. Soundit ovat
luonnollisesti hieman suttuiset, mutta muuten oikein toimivat.
Kaiken kaikkiaan Nightrhymes on varsin toimivaa materiaalia. Kappaleiden
rakenteet ovat ehkä hieman liian sekavia johtuen sävellysten lukuisista osista.
Omalta osaltaan se on
kuitenkin ymmärrettävää, koska instrumentaalimusiikissa pitää olla tarpeeksi
elementtejä, jotta laulua ei jää kaipaamaan. Ja niin ei tosiaankaan pääse
käymään Rigid Hornsin tapauksessa.
Ensimmäiseksi demoksi Nightrhymes on varsin valmis tapaus ja voikin vain toivoa,
että jollakin levy-yhtiöllä on kanttia ottaa yhtye talliinsa hienoisesta
poikkeavuudesta huolimatta.

Rigid Horns est un groupe assez jeune (quoique formé en 2001) et qui vient de
sortir sa première démo au début de l'année 2007. Une démo fort intéressante à
vrai dire, d'une part c'est à cause
du concept qui tourne principalement autour du côté sombre de la nature et la
liberté de l'esprit (pas vraiment nouveau tout de même comme concept), mais
aussi et surtout, parce que c'est du
Black Metal totalement instrumental. Certains regretteront l'absence du chant,
d'autres diront que ça ne change rien à la nature de la musique...
Pour ma part, je me situerais un peu entre les deux, mais je le dis tout de
suite, la musique est vraiment sublime! On ne remarque même pas l'absence du
chant (c'est de l'ironie me direz-vous),
et on ne se lasse pas de la nature de la musique qui est à vrai dire assez
répétitive, mais c'est plutôt dans le bon sens du terme. Les riffs sont remplis
d'émotions, me rappelant par moments Darkestrah,
et leur côté répétitif présente un certain aspect hypnotique très bien fait. On
a également le plaisir d'entendre de temps en temps un synthétiseur d'une nature
très raffinée et qui donne une toute autre
dimension à la musique. Même s'il est trop présent, ce n'est pas du tout du
Black Metal symphonique, pensez un peu au titre Dunkelheit de Burzum et vous
aurez une idée de quoi je parle.
Maintenant en ce qui concerne l'absence du chant, la démo telle qu'elle est ne
le nécéssite probablement pas. Mais c'est là que se pose la question:
aurait-elle été encore mieux avec du chant ou,
au contraire, aurait-il enlevé tout le charme s'il y'en avait, et surtout s'il
n'est pas de bonne qualité?
Bref Nightrhymes est un véritable petit joyau. Une musique 'nocturne',
relaxante, entraînante et d'une qualité exceptionnelle surtout pour une première
production.
Je suis déjà impatient de voir qu'est ce que le groupe a à nous offrir au futur.

Hmmm, könnte Black Metal sein - zumal der Bandname RIGID HORNS und das
Coverdesign durchaus in diese Richtung deuten... Würde man nämlich zu den
Instrumentalklängen,
die aus den Keyboards und programmierten Drums von Korpi sowie der Saitenarbeit
von N (der sich bei seinem Soloprojekt ATAVIX ein etwas längeres Pseudonym,
nämlich
"Lord Caligula", gönnt) bestehen, ein entsprechend keifiger Sänger plaziert,
könnte auf diesem Grund wohl eine anständige Schwarzwurzel wachsen.
Andererseits: Würde man eine Trällermeise hinzufügen,
könnte man sich auch durchaus vorstellen, daß das Endresultat Gothic Metal wäre.
Oder aber man könnte die Vorlage auch zu symphonisch-neoklassischem Metal
ausbauen. Lassen wir uns überraschen,
in welche Richtung sich RIGID HORNS mittels eines Sängers definieren werden,
oder ob sie ein "offenes" Instrumentalprojekt bleiben wollen.
Das erste RIGID HORNS-Demo ist zwar noch recht amateurhaft, aber doch weitgehend
interessant ausgefallen. Bedenklich ist in diesem Zusammenhang allerdings, daß
die CD-R von dem holländischen Label
WOLFSVUUR RECORDS vertrieben wird, die jede Menge braunen Dreck wie ABSURD oder
ARYAN BLOOD in ihrem Vertriebsprogramm hat.
